Designed for items, not people. Apple documents unwanted-tracking alerts for iPhone and Android and says location data is encrypted, but it must not be presented as a child-safety GPS tracker.
A second reviewer measured both generations with a sound meter and averaged 66dB for the original AirTag against 85dB for the second generation - louder, and shriller by a semitone. His own caveat: not measured under laboratory conditions.
In the same reviewer's real-world tests the second-generation AirTag found items over a range about 40 percent wider than the first generation, short of the up-to-50-percent improvement Apple advertises.
The second generation still has no keychain hole, so attaching it to keys means buying a key ring or loop on top of the tracker; the reviewer also found it too thick for slim wallets.
The second generation keeps the original's removable, non-rechargeable coin cell, which the reviewer expects to last about a year unless the alert sound is triggered often.
A reviewer with both generations in hand confirmed the second is dimensionally identical to the first - 1.26-inch (31.9 mm) diameter, 0.31-inch (8 mm) thick - with upper-case edge lettering the only visible difference.
Precision Finding now works from an Apple Watch for the first time, but only on a Series 9 or Ultra 2 and later running watchOS 26.2.1 with a matching iOS version - narrower than the AirTag's own iOS 26 requirement.
